Hello Stitchy friends,
Oh yes, it's been a long time, I know! Short story is that 2009 was a HORRID year and as such, all crafty endeavours suffered. But I'm getting back on track now, and to show you how much owl love you all here's a pattern from a late 60's Crewelwork set:
Hopefully it's clear enough for you to print and use...I don't have access to a scanner anymore, so I took a pic of this pattern with my i-phone. And don't forget to share any pics of your stitchy goodness to the Flickr embroidery pool!

Wright's cornerstone of modern architecture

CHICAGO ? Frederick C. Robie gave Frank Lloyd Wright just three instructions in 1905 for building his new home; he wanted it to be fireproof and to have a sense of openness and privacy.
What the bicycle manufacturer ended up getting would become the "cornerstone of the modern world of architecture," said Peter Schramm, a docent at the meticulously restored Robie House in Chicago.
Wright designed the three-story Roman brick house from his Oak Park, Ill., studio to have a sturdy limestone base to make the building appear to as it's part of the ground, Schramm said. And, the architect selected thin bricks to "set up the horizontal vision" that would define many other Prairie school-stye houses he would design.
Much attention was given to how mortar was applied between the bricks to make the house appear as repetitive bands of narrow horizontal stripes, like a "unique geological strata" rising to the wide overhangs of the low hip roof, other architectural details that would define Wright, Schramm said.
"The Prairie vocabulary was developed in Oak Park," he said.
The house at 5757 S. Woodlawn Ave. is on the National Register of Historic Landmarks based on its architectural merits alone, and has been absorbed into the University of Chicago campus, he said.
It's the first house in the United States to have been built with a full steel beam support system, primarily to hold the nearly 17.5-foot overhang that juts out seemingly unsupported over the front porch.
The Germans nicknamed to the house "the steamship," while Robie lovingly called it "the battleship," Schramm said.
Visitors enter the house through a door tucked into the back of the house and partially hidden behind a high brick wall that cuts out the traffic noise.
Inside, the reception hall ceiling would only be 6 feet 8 inches off the floor to make people feel uncomfortable there until they moved upstairs to a larger room with a higher ceiling.
Wright would reuse this technique called "compression," too, because it gave people a "sense of relief" while exploring their way into his houses," Schramm said.
The house came under threat of demolition in 1941 and again in 1957, only to be rescued by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the University of Chicago. The school and Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust have invested $5.5 million to stabilize the house by restoring the bricks and rebuilding the roof.
The final phase involves adding carpeting, reproduction furnishing and restoring the art glass windows, which Wright didn't name.
The living room is surrounded by large windows that allowed Robie to see all of his neighbors' houses. However, the stained glass was positioned in places that gave him privacy behind a nearly 4-foot brick outdoor banister.
The ceiling here has oak banding to make it appear even taller and a step-down hearth in the fireplace. Also recessed into the ceiling were ornate Wright-designed wooden light screens.
The tour proceeded to a guest room and a kitchen, which was built larger that many others Wright would later include in the homes he designed. Tourists were not permitted inside the three bedrooms on the third floor.
They leave beside Midwest's' first attached three-car garage, something that Wright included even before Ford began producing the Model T.
"Wright realized how important the car would become to America," Schramm said.

Superior 140 : 7 kitten motifs
It's time for some DOW tea towels. I love to stitch a kitteh, and these ones are so sweet they will give you the proverbial toothache! Little kittys doing household tasks, we can never get enough of them. Neither it seems could Superior brand transfers, for I have a lot of transfers from that particular company that feature cats.
Kitty is ironing, hanging out the washing (wearing roller skates no less), singing at church, sweeping the floor, mending clothes, having a tea party, and on a tricycle doing the shopping. All the time she has a little friend doggy or a stuffed toy to help her. The relationship between cats and dogs in transfer-land always amuses me, as it has little relation to real life cat-dog interaction. Unless of course, in this transfer below, the doggy is about to come and nip her on her posterior. That would be like my animals - Lola can't see a cat bottom go past without chasing it.
Of course, like all good homemakers, she's providing tea for all (that's one of my founding principles, "tea for all") and little stuffed teddy, kitty and bunny are happy to play along. As the pattern says, these are meant to be for days-of-the-week towels, but they'd look cute on children's quilts or bed linen as well. Whilst I don't want to muscle in on the Vogart hyperbole, in my opinion:These darling designs are quick and easy to sew, and a choice of gay, bright colours will make your towels come alive and add fun to your modern kitchen. Children will love their own towels stitched with Miss Kitten and her friends, and a set will make washing hands no longer a chore! Just stitch these designs and instantly you will become more attractive, and they will bring good fortune and friends into your life. Your home will be beautiful, your children, beaming with health, rosy cheeked and perfectly scrubbed and well behaved, and your husband will cherish the perfect homemaker that he married.

Vintage summer
In honour of the most gorgeous summer weather we've been having in the UK for the last week, here's a collection of images that give me good summer vibes. They're all examples of a vintage/ethereal type post-processing treatment that I really like, has a very nostalgic and soft summery feel about it. I've experimented a little to try and replicate the look of this with some of my own pictures, but haven't really been satisfied with many of the results so far - can't quite get the same soft pastel feel happening. Shooting in RAW on a 50mm with slight overexposure seems to be a good start

Embellishing the Runway (with beads !)
Project Runway season 9 is in full swing, and this year, I decided (last minute) to join in the fun of designing accessories for each week's winning outfit and posting them in a Flickr group called
Embellishing the Runway. I knew about it last year from my beading friends on Facebook but didn't think I could keep up at the time. This year seems right so I joined a day before the first week deadline. I managed to create a simple bracelet which captures the colors of the winning design by Bert Keeter. I used a basic four bead herringbone stitch which works up quickly and chose some greys and orange (the closest thing I had was more of a pumpkin color). The winning design for this week seems to have stirred up alot of controversy and I'm late starting so it looks like some midnight beading sessions are in order this week ! More pictures posted in the coming weeks (fingers/beading needles crossed !)

Metropolis Necklace-Etsy Beadweavers Challenge
This month's Etsy Beadweavers challenge theme, Fashion Through the Ages , struck a chord with me because I had a pattern developed that fit perfectly with the Art Deco style of design. I created the triangular portion of my Metropolis Necklace using the pattern I made with my BeadTool design program and stitched it in herringbone using 4 beads at a time. Then I worked upward in brick stitch to a decent choker width of 1/2" and finished out the rest of the choker in peyote. I had fun looking through my vintage button collection and found the perfect button to complement the Art Deco design. Of course, I finished it all last minute and could only get some basic photos done. Next time, no procrastinating (yeah right) ! Saddling up to this bar

PITTSBURGH, Pa. ? Somewhere between a Johnny Cash tune and an acoustic version of Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler" over the speakers at a new Pittsburgh bar I take a liking to my barstool today like a herd of cattle looking for a shady place to rest.
Maybe it's the urban-sheik "cowgirl" bartender or the rustic lodge decor that brings me back to the Rowdy Buck, the newest in a string of bars on the Pittsburgh's South Side owned by two entrepreneurs whom have helped to reinvent this part of the city.
Most likely I return because I am drawn to this watering hole's novel approach to warming the belly.
"We're also going for the craft cocktail bar theme," the bartender explains while we discuss the place at 1325 E. Carson St., which, at first blush, seems better suited for a roughneck out to belt down a shot or six of rye whiskey than a dude looking to sip a fancy martini.
The interior is lined with log-shaped pine siding. The ceiling above the bar is appropriately covered in shave tree bark. Across the room a frame holds a Boy Scout uniform and camping gear not far from deer antlers hanging from two ceiling beams. On a shelf behind the bar rests a wonderful, handmade whirligig - a miniature wooden lumberjack frozen in time beside a row of three pine trees, unless, of course, a strong wind comes along and puts this gadget to work.
OK. I've heard of craft beer by now in this misunderstood city, where nearly 10 percent of beer drinkers are snobs and prefer more-flavorful brew crafted by independent breweries over that produced by big corporations. But the craft cocktail concept needs a bit of explanation by the knowledgeable mixologist behind the bar.
She says bar customers, today, are being lured to pre-Prohibition cocktails because of a recent trend introduced in New York and Chicago. Bartenders there are being greeted with accolades by adding such an odd ingredient as a splash of beet juice to the traditional gin martini.
My pal Dash Kaplan at Bocktown in nearby Robinson Township - last year's Pittsburgh Magazine bartender of the year - calls his version of that mixed drink the Pepper Beet-Tini. He concocts it with Absolut Peppar vodka with a garnish of a slice of pickled beet, spear of pickled asparagus and jalape�o stuffed olive. It doesn't get more creative than that behind the bar.
Give this guy a hoppy glass of India Pale Ale and I'm happy. And this establishment, which has yet to install a draft beer system, has plenty of bottles of craft beer to choose from.
The Rowdy Buck, which opened March 16, introduces its cocktail theme with an expensive absinthe fountain, which is planted in the center of the bar until it needs shielded from klutzy patrons.
The glass and silver fountain holds ice water to drip over a caramelized sugar cube balanced on a spoon over a glass to flavor one $17 shot of absinthe.
That's pretty fancy for a bar whose menu features little else than 11 hot dogs, vegetarian chili, beef stew and curried potato salad.
But hold your horses these are not your ordinary hot dogs.
One bears the name The Tokyo and it's topped with seaweed, radish and wasabi mayo - a recipe that is sure "to melt your kimono," the menu promises.
I select The Cobb Dog served with lettuce, tomato, avocado, bacon and crumbled blue cheese. The sandwich is pretty tasty, even though it's difficult to find the hot dog buried under all that dressing.
Between bites I giggle upon noticing a large frame beside the bar holding a cast of a bigfoot "footprint" beside a photograph of this elusive ape-like creature.
This bar owned Scott Kramer and Steve Zumoff oddly sits next door their Beehive, a great coffee shop that appeals to grungy artsy-types. These guys also own three other local bars, include the hoopy, trailer park-inspired Double Wide Grill, a restaurant that is about to open a second location in Cranberry Township, Pa.
All things combined, Pittsburgh is lucky to have these two cowpokes.

Green Droplets Tatted Necklace
My Mom's birthday was this week so I decided to try a pattern that was in my head to make a necklace for her in her favorite colors. After some tweaking of the stitch count, I got it to shape around the neck nicely, and used exactly the number of fringe beads I had on hand. This pattern was so successful, I think I will make a video tutorial when I'm in the mood.
